Blue Ridge River Runners - Who we are

American Whitewater Affiliate
Dedicated to the Preservation and Enjoyment of Our Wild Waters

Based in Lynchburg, VA, the Blue Ridge River Runners Canoe and Kayak Club was formed in December of 1984, and has since grown to be the third largest paddlers' organization in Virginia. Whether you are a beginner, or advanced paddler, whether you are into flatwater boating or Class V whitewater, we have something for you. Our newsletters and our website list frequent trips on regional rivers, led by experienced paddlers.

The Club sponsors several exciting annual events, such as our West Virginia Whitewater Extravaganza, during which we camp, feast, canoe, kayak and raft West Virginia's famous New River Gorge, or our yearly visit to the Nantahala Outdoor Center for their Guest Appreciation Festival and flea market. We frequently organize multi-day (up to three weeks) trips to Arizona, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Ontario and Quebec Canada, and maybe even Alaska.

Our Club is affiliated with American Whitewater, and several other major paddling organizations.

Several local and regional Outfitters offer our members significant discounts on purchases at their stores.

BRRR Goals
Our goals are:
  • River Safety and Rescue
  • Paddling Instruction
  • Conservation and Protection of Virginia streams and rivers.
  • Introducing like-minded people to the beauty and grandeur of our wild waters.
Newsletter
A bi-monthly newsletter is mailed to every member approximately ten days prior to each scheduled meeting. This publication keeps members informed about upcoming trips and programs, and offers some fun reading about past trips. It also serves as a reminder about the upcoming meeting. Also featured are trip reports and articles from, by, and about our fellow paddlers. Please send your articles and reports to our Newsletter Editor, Joe Schuppe .
Whitewater Rafting
BRRR owns several whitewater rafts, which are available for BRRR-sponsored activities. Additionally, they are available for rent as an accommodation to our members. A small per-participant, per-day raft maintenance fee ($25 for members, and $30 for non-members) is charged  to help BRRR to defray the costs of maintaining the rafts and related equipment. No profit or monetary gain is made from this service.  Helmets, lifejackets, pumps, first-aid kits and paddles are furnished with the rafts. For more information on planning a raft trip, click here.

Several experienced raft guides are available from within our membership to guide your trip. Our guides are all volunteers; they receive no pay for their services.

During the summer months, the rafts are in great demand. Reservations are absolutely necessary. Call early. Check the Raft Schedule for availability.

To reserve your raft and to arrange for a guide, contact the Raft Custodian, Howard Kirkland, at 434-941-1225.

Instruction and Workshops
River Safety being the Club's first priority, rescue workshops are held frequently to help trip leaders and potential trip leaders refresh their safety skills. Also, within the Club are a number of certified whitewater instructors, for both open and decked boats. BRRR also has certified Red Cross First Aid and CPR instructors. Classes are scheduled according to demand.
Outfitters: Canoes, kayaks, rafts and gear
Many of these Outfitters offer a significant discount to Blue Ridge River Runners members. Be sure to mention your affiliation when placing an order.
