Blue Ridge River Runners

Idaho 2010

The 3rd Annual David Morgan Memorial Western Rivers Extravaganza

This Is Your Invitation!

For the past twelve years or so, members of the Blue Ridge River Runners have been making an annual odyssey to the magnificent wilderness areas of the American West, to enjoy the remote, challenging and pristine rivers to be found there. Since the recent demise of our dear friend and BRRR member, David Morgan, we have dedicated our trips in his memory. Last year, we fulfilled his wishes by distributing his ashes on the shore of the Middle Fork Salmon River in Idaho, Dave's favorite river.

The rivers we paddle are usually intermediate level (Class III-IV). Day trips on rivers of greater or lesser difficulty can also be arranged. You may paddle your own boat, or ride in one of our rafts. These trips have always proven to be extremely enjoyable, and relatively inexpensive.

We normally schedule two weeks in June or July, beginning and ending on weekends. Some of us travel together, sharing the driving and fuel expenses, while others choose to fly or otherwise furnish their own transportation. We already have all the necessary rafts and common kitchen, water filtration and toilet equipment. We will also obtain all the food for the trip; the costs will be shared by all. All you need to furnish are your own boat, paddling gear, clothing, camping gear and personal items. For those of you who don’t wish to paddle their own boats, we can put you into one of the rafts. If the demand is great enough, we will furnish a paddle raft and guide.

This trip is open to all BRRR members, their families and friends.

The Dates

June 12-27, 2010

Those of us who plan to travel together will depart Lynchburg on the evening of Friday, June 11, and will drive straight through to our first paddling opportunity, which is yet to be determined.

The Plan

We hope to obtain a permit to float the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. Barring this, we will do single-and multi-day trips on other rivers in the area. These may include, but are not limited to:

The Permit Party

Permits to float the Middle Fork are issued through Idaho’s Four Rivers Lottery. Since the Middle Fork is an extremely popular river, the odds of obtaining a permit are around 1 in 35. For this reason, it is necessary for us to file as many applications as possible. Historically, the least-requested launch dates are mid-week; Wednesdays and Thursdays. Therefore, we all apply for a launch date of Wednesday, June 16, 2010.

If you plan to participate, you will need to come to our Permit Party on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 7:00 PM at Howard Kirkland's house. We will have application forms ready to fill out. Bring your checkbook with you.

Keep in mind that if your application is successful, you MUST participate in the trip. You will be the official Trip Leader. Permits are non-transferable.
